There's really not much difference, a gun sighted at 100 yards is also sighted in at 40 yards, and a 50 yard zero is also sighted in at 85 yards. You have to remember that the bullet crosses the line of sight twice, so in reality one is a 40 yard zero and one is a 50 yard zero.
